Antoine Lienhardt makes this Gevrey-Chambertin from Pinot Noir on the Côte de Nuits, farmed biodynamically with minimal intervention. Aged 16 months in used French oak, it shows dark cherry, wild berries, rose and a savoury earthiness, with the firm structure typical of the village.
Description
Antoine Lienhardt farms vineyards in Comblanchien on the Côte de Nuits, working biodynamically and with a natural, low intervention approach in the cellar. This Gevrey-Chambertin comes from the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, where Pinot Noir sits on limestone and marl soils that lend the village its weight and grip. The cool continental climate and wide day to night temperature swing preserve acidity and slow ripening, fixing aromatic detail in the fruit. Fermentation runs with native yeasts, and the wine spends 16 months in used French oak barrels, a format that allows slow oxygen exchange and gentle tannin integration without adding obvious vanilla or toast. The colour is medium ruby. The nose leads with dark cherry and wild berries, lifted by rose and a savoury earthiness, with liquorice and a faint mineral edge underneath. The palate is medium bodied, fresh and firmly framed, the tannins fine grained and the finish long and savoury. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, ideally decanted briefly to open the aromatics. It suits roast duck, rare beef and earthy mushroom dishes.
