Description
Anselmo Mendes is based in Monção, in the Minho region on the border between Portugal and Galicia, and built his name on indigenous grapes and traditional methods. Pardusco is a red Vinho Verde, an unusual style, made from Brancellao, Caíño Tinto and Pedral. The Minho is cool, wet and Atlantic, with granite-derived sandy soils that drain well and keep yields modest. That maritime climate is the key to the wine: the long, mild growing season preserves natural acidity and keeps sugar and therefore alcohol low, here just 12 percent. The varieties themselves are tart and lightly structured, giving a wine built on freshness rather than power. Expect a bright, light ruby colour, a nose of tart red berry, redcurrant and rhubarb with a clear smoky note, and a palate that is vinous, crisp and unpretentious, finishing with red cherry and a twist of black pepper. The wine is vegan and farmed with respect for the land. Serve it cool, around 12 to 14 degrees, which suits its zip and lightness. It is a good partner for grilled sardines, roast pork and tomato-led dishes.
