Ànima del Priorat blends Garnacha, Cariñena, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon from the slate soils around Bellmunt in Priorat. Aged six months in steel and barrel, it is the winery’s accessible Priorat, with red berry, plum, pepper and a smoky mineral edge.
Description
Ànima del Priorat is the entry red of Casa Gran del Siurana, made on the outskirts of Bellmunt del Priorat to show the character of the Priorat appellation in a younger, more approachable style. It blends the region's heritage grapes Garnacha and Cariñena with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon, all grown on the licorella slate that defines Priorat. The slate is poor and free-draining, forcing vines to root deep and yielding concentrated fruit, while it reflects heat and gives the smoky, stony minerality typical of the zone. The fruit is farmed sustainably. Ageing is brief, six months split between stainless steel and oak barrel, a short regime that keeps the fruit fresh and primary while the barrel portion adds gentle structure and a little spice. The colour is deep purple-red. The nose shows red berry and plum, black pepper, dried herbs and a smoky mineral note. The palate is full but supple, with ripe fruit, moderate tannins and the mineral grip of Priorat slate, finishing savoury. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It is a versatile red for grilled meat and hearty dishes.
