Description
Andrea Mufatto Godello is a barrel-aged white from D.O. Bierzo, in Castilla y León, made by the Mendoza duo of Andrea Mufatto and Gerardo Michelini in partnership with local grower César Márquez. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin in the northwest of Spain, where old Godello vines grow on slate and clay soils that hold cool moisture and lend the wine its saline, stony backbone. The 2023 spends 24 months in barrel, an unusually long time for the variety. That extended contact with wood and fine lees builds texture through mannoprotein release and slow oxygen exchange, softening the acidity and adding a savoury, nutty depth while the lees protect the fruit. This is organic fruit, farmed without synthetic inputs. In the glass it shows a bright golden colour, with white peach, ripe pear and citrus peel on the nose lifting into hazelnut, honey and toasted bread from the oak. The palate is broad and creamy but kept in line by that mineral, slate-driven freshness, closing long and faintly saline. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a full white glass.

Additional information
Pairs with grilled hake, roast chicken and pork loin, where the barrel weight matches the richness of the dish. The saline freshness also suits aged Manchego and roasted squash. Serve it lightly chilled rather than cold so the texture shows.
