Celler U Mes U make this organic Xarel·lo in Guardiola, the highest village of the Penedès. Grapes from the loamy Can Llerda vineyard are destemmed and macerated cold at 8 degrees, giving a fresh white of green apple, lemon and orchard fruit.
Description
Anais Blanco comes from Celler U Mes U, a small organic estate in Guardiola, the highest part of the Penedès above Barcelona, run by three growers whose partnership gives the winery its name. It is a varietal Xarel·lo, the native Catalan white behind much of the region's still and sparkling wine. The fruit is grown at altitude on the deep loamy soils of the Can Llerda vineyard, where cooler nights slow ripening and hold on to acidity, so the grapes come in fresh rather than heavy. The winemaking is deliberately protective: whole bunches are destemmed and the fruit is macerated cold at 8 degrees before pressing, a low temperature that limits oxidation and fixes the primary aromas and the varietal's characteristic grip. There is no oak, keeping the focus on fruit and texture. The colour is pale with green tints. The nose is bright and orchard led, with green apple, lemon and pear over a hint of white flowers and a faint earthiness from the loam. The palate is dry and clean, with a slightly waxy Xarel·lo weight and a fresh, savoury finish. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with lighter dishes.
