Raúl Pérez makes Amigos del Tiempo El Morisco from Garnacha grown in the high Gredos hills of Ávila. Twelve months in oak give this biodynamic, natural red intense sour cherry and red berry fruit over fresh herbs and a peppery, mineral depth.
Description
Amigos del Tiempo is a project of Raúl Pérez, one of Spain's most prominent contemporary winemakers, set in the high hills of the Gredos mountains in Ávila, in Castilla y León. The wine is a single varietal Garnacha Tinta, grown at altitude on the granite and sandy soils that characterise Gredos. The combination of high elevation, poor granitic soils and a wide day to night temperature range gives Garnacha here a lighter, fresher, more mineral profile than the warm climate norm, with bright acidity and red fruit rather than jammy weight. Farming is biodynamic and the wine is made naturally, with minimal intervention. It is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds structure while keeping the fruit and herbal character intact. The colour is medium ruby. The nose is intense, with sour cherry and red berries over fresh herbs and pepper, and the palate is fresh and concentrated, with ripe fruit, fine tannin and a savoury, faintly mineral close. Serve at 16 degrees in a large glass and decant briefly. It pairs with grilled meats and game.
