Description
Amancio is a single-vineyard Tempranillo from Sierra Cantabria in Rioja, made by the Eguren family, who have farmed here across five generations. The fruit comes from one plot at the end of La Veguilla in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, fifteen hectares of vines between twenty and thirty-five years old. The site sits on the Sonsierra slopes below the Sierra de Cantabria, where poor stony soils and a cool influence off the mountains slow ripening and preserve acidity at altitude. Low yields off older vines concentrate the fruit. The wine completes malolactic fermentation, which softens the acidity and rounds the texture, then ages 24 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, where the small barrel and long elevage settle the tannins and add cedar and sweet spice through slow oxygen exchange. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe blackberry and black plum over sweet baking spice and a vanilla edge. The palate is full and structured, the tannins firm and finely grained, the oak integrated into dark fruit on a long finish. Farmed under respectful agriculture. Serve at 17C and decant. Pairs with roast lamb and grilled beef.
