Description
Altún Vino de Pueblo Tempranillo comes from Bodegas Altún in Baños de Ebro, in the Rioja Alavesa. Founded in 1989, the winery blends traditional methods with newer cellar technology, and works 45 hectares of its own vines averaging around 40 years of age. The Rioja Alavesa lies on the cooler northern bank of the Ebro, where clay-limestone soils and a moderate climate suit Tempranillo well: the limestone retains moisture and keeps acidity firm, while the older vines give lower yields of more concentrated fruit. Ageing is split across 14 months in oak barrel and concrete. The barrel adds a measured tannin and a sweet spice frame through slow oxygen exchange, while the concrete holds the wine in a more reductive, neutral setting that preserves freshness and pure fruit. The result is a deep ruby red showing ripe cherry, red berries and plum, with liquorice, a hint of vanilla and an earthy undertone. The palate is medium bodied at 13.5 per cent, with supple tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits lamb, beef and hard cheese.
