Description
Altún makes La Cicatera in D.O.Ca. Rioja from Garnacha Tinta planted on a lean, calcareous soil where low fertility and tight nutrient supply push the vine to dig deep and yield concentrated fruit. Garnacha thrives in this kind of poor, warm site, ripening to a generous, fruit-forward style while the continental swing between hot days and cold nights holds its acidity and keeps the aromatics bright. This 2024 was raised 14 months in separate containers, an unhurried élevage that settles the wine and rounds its texture while keeping the fruit fresh and the oak influence light. It shows a vivid ruby red. The nose is generous, with ripe red berries, cherry and plum over black pepper, dried herbs and a faint stony, earthy lift. The palate is juicy and supple, the tannins soft and the warmth of ripe Garnacha balanced by lively acidity through a long, peppery finish. This is a forward, joyful style made to be enjoyed young rather than cellared. Serve at 15 to 17 degrees, lightly chilled in summer, with grilled pork, lamb chops or roasted vegetables.
