Pagos del Rey makes this young Ribera del Duero Roble from Tinta del País. Just three months in oak keep the dark cherry and plum fruit fresh and forward, with a light spice frame and a juicy, easygoing palate.
Description
Pagos del Rey is part of the Solís family group and works from a modern winery in Olmedillo de Roa, in the heart of D.O. Ribera del Duero. Altos de Tamarón Roble is a young, fruit driven red made from Tinta del País, the local name for Tempranillo. Ribera del Duero sits high on the northern Spanish meseta, where hot days and cold nights give a wide diurnal range that slows ripening, deepens colour and keeps the acidity fresh. Limestone and clay soils drain well and stress the vines. This is a roble, or lightly oaked, style, spending just three months in oak barrels, enough for a touch of slow oxygen exchange to round the tannins and add a light vanilla and spice frame while keeping the fruit bright and primary. It is deep cherry red, with a nose of ripe red and black cherry, plum and a hint of vanilla and liquorice. The palate is medium bodied, juicy and approachable, with fresh dark fruit, soft tannin and a clean, lightly spiced finish. This is a wine to drink young rather than cellar. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato based dishes.
