Altos de Tamarón Crianza is a red from D.O. Ribera del Duero made by Pagos del Rey from Tinta del País, the local name for Tempranillo. Pagos del Rey, part of the Félix Solís group, founded the Altos de Tamarón brand at Olmedillo de Roa in Burgos, in the heart of the appellation. The vineyards sit on the high Duero plateau, where chalky clay and gravel soils and an altitude of around 800 metres drive a sharp continental climate. Hot days ripen the Tinta del País while cold nights hold colour, acidity and aromatic freshness, the wide diurnal range that defines Ribera del Duero. After fermentation the wine is aged as a Crianza in oak, where the slow oxygen exchange through the barrel softens the firm tannins of the variety and layers in spice, cocoa and a light toast. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe red and black fruit with cocoa, tobacco and spice. The palate enters smoothly and turns structured, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a warm, spiced finish. Serve at 17 degrees, decanted, with roast or grilled red meat.
