Losada Vinos de Finca makes Altos de Losada in D.O. Bierzo from old-vine Mencía on clay slopes. Fifteen months in French oak gives a fresh, mineral red of ripe plum, blackberry and a graphite edge.
Description
Altos de Losada is a single-variety Mencía from Losada Vinos de Finca, based in Cacabelos in the Bierzo appellation of north-west Spain. The fruit comes from 21 small plots of old vines planted on clay slopes with different orientations, a patchwork that gives the wine both depth and complexity. Bierzo sits in a sheltered basin where Atlantic and continental climates meet, and the old vines, grown on clay over slate-influenced subsoils, ripen the thin-skinned Mencía slowly while keeping its natural freshness and floral lift. The wine follows a traditional vinification and is aged 15 months in French oak barrels, which firms the structure, adds a light vanilla and spice frame and lets the tannins settle through gentle oxygen exchange. It is bottled unfiltered. The colour is deep ruby, with a nose of ripe plum and blackberry over violet, black pepper and an earthy, graphite minerality typical of the variety. The palate is medium to full at 14.5% alcohol, with fresh acidity, fine tannins and a savoury, mineral finish. The winery recommends decanting at least an hour before serving. Serve at 16 to 17C with roast and grilled meats and game.
