Bodegas Corral makes this Rioja Crianza from single estate Tempranillo at Sojuela, near Navarrete. Twelve months in oak give red berry and cherry fruit framed by vanilla, dried herbs and a savoury, gently structured palate.
Description
Altos de Corral Crianza comes from Bodegas Corral, a family winery in La Rioja whose first vines were planted over a century ago at Sojuela, close to Navarrete in Rioja Alta. The estate sits on the higher, cooler ground of the appellation, where calcareous clay soils and a continental climate with wide day to night temperature swings let the Tempranillo ripen slowly and keep its acidity. The grapes are fermented and then aged twelve months in oak to earn the Crianza classification. Malolactic conversion lowers the acidity and adds roundness, while the time in barrel softens the tannins through oxygen exchange and lends vanilla, sweet spice and a light toast. The wine is medium ruby, with aromas of red berries, cherry and plum over vanilla, leather and dried herbs. The palate is savoury and balanced, with ripe fruit, supple tannin and the gentle grip of oak through a clean finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It works with roast and grilled meats and with hard Spanish cheeses such as Manchego.
