Joan d’Anguera grows this single-varietal Garnacha on the biodynamic Altaroses estate in Montsant, on silt, clay and limestone soils. Concrete ageing keeps it fresh and unoaked, showing ripe strawberry and cherry over wild herbs.
Description
Altaroses comes from Joan d'Anguera in Montsant, the Catalan appellation that wraps around Priorat, and is made entirely from Garnacha grown on the estate's own Altaroses farm. The soils mix silt, clay and limestone, and the vineyard is worked to biodynamic principles, which favour healthy soil life and balanced ripening. Garnacha picked at full ripeness ferments for twelve days in stainless steel at a controlled 25 degrees to keep the fruit clean and bright, then completes malolactic fermentation and ageing in concrete vats. Concrete adds no oak flavour and lets the wine breathe gently while keeping its fresh, fruit-driven profile intact, so the focus stays on the grape and the site. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose is perfumed, with ripe strawberry and red cherry lifted by thyme, crushed rock and a floral rose note. The palate is medium bodied and supple, with soft tannins, juicy acidity and a savoury, mineral finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly cooled if you prefer. It pairs well with grilled pork, roast chicken and mushroom dishes.
