Altanza make this single variety Tempranillo in Fuenmayor, Rioja Alta, from their own vineyards. Eighteen months in French oak give a Reserva built on raspberry and cherry fruit, black pepper and balsamic depth, with a savoury Rioja core.
Description
Altanza is a Rioja Alta winery based in Fuenmayor, founded in 1998 with the aim of making reserva and gran reserva wines from more than 200 hectares of estate vineyards. This Reserva is pure Tempranillo, the grape that defines classic Rioja. The clay and limestone soils of Rioja Alta hold water well and give the wine its firm acid structure, while the moderating influence of the Cantabrian mountains slows ripening and preserves freshness in the fruit. The wine spends eighteen months in French oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange through the staves softens the tannins and adds vanilla, clove and toast, and the slow ageing lets fruit, oak and tertiary character integrate. Expect a medium ruby colour and a bouquet of raspberry and cherry threaded with pepper and balsamic nuance. The palate is savoury and structured, with red fruit, cedar and a leather and dried herb edge that comes with time in barrel. The finish is dry and lasting. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, ideally decanted an hour ahead, in a large bowled glass. It suits roast lamb, grilled red meat and aged sheep's cheese.
