Alma Distilleria Mater Rum SUGARCANE JUICE PURE – SINGLE RUM “PURPLE CANE” 2024

Alma Distilleria Mater Rum Sugarcane Juice Pure Purple Cane 2024 is an agricole-style white from Alma Distilleria in Italy, distilled from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice under the Mater Rum label. As an Italian producer, Alma cannot use the protected agricole term, but the single-variety, single-rum approach here, built on purple cane, is squarely in that tradition.

Distilled on a pot still, it has a rounder, oilier body than a creole-column blanc. The nose is distinctly floral with overripe pear, fresh citrus, herbs and a faint medicinal edge. The palate is more mineral and balanced, the ripe pear complemented by white pepper and a saline note, and the finish turns iodised, spicy and herbal with fresh cane. Bottled unsweetened at 54%, it is a clean but expressive white that shows European artisan distillers working the cane-juice template seriously. Best neat to follow its pear-and-mineral arc, or stirred into a punch.
