Distilled in 2009 and bottled by Murray McDavid in 2024 under the Benchmark imprint, this is a 15 Years Old Allt-a-Bhainne at 53.2% ABV finished in Madeira casks. The release is one of 1,258 bottles. Murray McDavid is one of the longer running Scottish independent bottlers, founded in 1995, with the Benchmark line as its core single malt programme.
Allt-a-Bhainne ferments malted barley for 48 to 50 hours on Mauri liquid yeast in closed stainless steel washbacks, then double distills through two copper wash stills and two copper spirit stills with steam heating and shell and tube condensers. The short Speyside ferment produces a clean malt forward spirit built as a blend filler for Chivas Regal, Passport and 100 Pipers. New make is reduced with Rowantree Burn water and tankered to Keith for cask filling and maturation, since the distillery holds no warehousing on site.
Madeira casks impart a distinctive oxidative character through compounds left by estufagem or canteiro heat ageing. The wood retains sotolon, furfural and Maillard products from the heat treatment, giving cooked dried fruit, caramelised sugar and a nutty register distinct from sherry. Fifteen years of cask interaction lets the Madeira character integrate fully with the underlying maturation, with cooked dried fruit notes joining the developed ex Bourbon base. Allt-a-Bhainne new make was designed as a blend backbone, built to integrate cleanly rather than dominate, which suits long cask development.
