Description
Allegrini is a long-established family producer around Verona, in Italy, and this Lugana comes from vineyards on the southern shore of Lake Garda, in Lombardy. Lugana is built on Turbiana, the local name for Trebbiano di Soave, grown here on heavy clay soils laid down by the retreating lake. Those clays hold water and give Lugana its characteristic body and a fine, slightly saline minerality, while the moderating breeze off the lake keeps the grapes fresh and preserves acidity. This is the youthful, unoaked expression: the wine spends four months on its lees and a further two in bottle before release. The short lees contact adds a little texture and a faint nutty note while keeping the wine light, clean and driven by fresh fruit. The colour is pale straw with green glints. The nose is delicate, with lemon, green apple and white flowers, and a subtle white-peach note. The palate is light and fresh, the citrus and orchard fruit carried on crisp acidity to a clean, mineral finish with a hint of almond. It is made to drink young. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10C.
