Description
Algueira works in D.O. Ribeira Sacra in Galicia, where vines cling to steep terraces of slate and schist above the Sil and Miño rivers in some of Spain's most demanding viticulture. Dolio is led by Mencía and rounded out with native grapes including Brancellao, Souson, Caíño Tinto and Garnacha Tintorera, all farmed sustainably. The Atlantic-influenced climate is cooler and wetter than inland Spain, and the slate soils store daytime heat and drain quickly, ripening the fruit while preserving freshness and a clear stony character. The 2020 spends twenty-four months in oak barrels, a long ageing that softens the tannins through gradual oxygen exchange and adds spice, cedar and depth to the dark fruit. It is a deep ruby, showing plum, dark cherry and red berries, earth, liquorice and a peppery, mineral lift. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh and structured, with firm but fine tannin and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted for an hour. It is a fine partner for roast and grilled red meats.
