An extreme overproof white from Suriname’s historic Marienburg distillery at a colossal 81%, raw and elemental with solvent, glue and pungent heat, no pretence of a sipper and squarely a high octane mixing rum with deep plantation roots.
Description
Marienburg White Overproof comes from Suriname Alcoholic Beverages, whose Marienburg site traces back to an eighteenth century plantation and sugar factory and was formally established as a distillery in 1966. Bottled at a staggering 81%, this is one of the most potent rums on any shelf, an unaged white made to be handled with respect.
At this strength the spirit is elemental and fierce, the nose dominated by alcohol, solvent and glue with a pungent edge, the palate hot and searing with the same chemical notes and a flash of citrus underneath, then a burning, biting finish. No one should mistake this for a neat sipper, and even seasoned overproof drinkers find it raw, it is plainly built as a high octane mixer and a cultural fixture rather than a tasting rum. Taken honestly, its job is to add ferocious strength and a rough cane character to punches and cocktails, where a very small measure goes a very long way.
