Alceño Syrah Premium is a Jumilla red blending Syrah with Monastrell from the winery’s own vineyards, aged six months in French and American oak. Ripe and warm, with dark plum, pepper and a smoky, spiced edge.
Description
Bodegas Alceño, founded in 1870 and now run by the fourth generation, make this red in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia. The blend is 85% Syrah with 15% Monastrell, both from the estate's own vineyards. Jumilla has a continental climate tempered by the Mediterranean, with strong sun, very little rain and a marked swing between cold winters and hot summers. The heat and drought hold yields low and ripen the fruit fully to 14.5% alcohol, while the big difference between day and night temperatures preserves enough acidity to keep the wine fresh. Monastrell adds backbone and dark fruit to the spice and pepper of the Syrah. The wine is aged for six months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, a short, measured spell that rounds the tannins and adds a frame of sweet spice and a smoky edge while leaving the ripe fruit in front. The colour is deep, near-opaque ruby. The nose shows dark plum, ripe red berries, black pepper and a smoky, herbal note. The palate is warm and full-bodied, with supple tannins, generous fruit and a finish of liquorice and spice. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It pairs well with grilled red meats and barbecue.
