Description
Bodegas Alceño was founded in 1879 as the first commercial winery in D.O. Jumilla, in Murcia, and is now run by the fourth generation of the family. This rosé is a blend of Monastrell at around 85 percent with Syrah making up the rest, grown in the estate's own vineyards. Jumilla has a continental climate with Mediterranean influence: sunny with little rain, an annual average of about 16 degrees, very cold winters and summers that can exceed 40 degrees. Those conditions ripen Monastrell fully, the grape that defines the region, giving deep colour and ripe fruit, while the wide day-to-night swing helps retain acidity. The rosé is made by short skin contact and cool fermentation to capture the ripe fruit while keeping the wine fresh, with Syrah adding colour, spice and a peppery lift. The result is a rosé of more intense colour than a pale Provence style, with aromas of strawberry, cherry and plum over a herbal, peppery note. The palate is dry, fruity and generous, with ripe red fruit, good body and a clean finish. Serve chilled at around 9 to 11 degrees.
