Bodegas Alceño, a fourth-generation Jumilla estate founded in 1870, makes this organic Monastrell and Syrah from old vines on limestone at 600 to 900 metres. Aged 12 months in French and American oak, it is ripe and warm, with plum, pepper and a vanilla edge.
Description
Alceño 4 Organic is a red from Bodegas Alceño in D.O. Jumilla, an estate founded in 1870 and now run by the fourth generation. It blends Monastrell with Syrah from old organic vineyards on calcareous soils at altitudes of 600 to 900 metres. The climate is continental with a Mediterranean influence, with very cold winters, fiercely hot summers and little rain, which ripens the Monastrell fully while the altitude brings cooler nights and a wide diurnal range to keep acidity and aroma. The limestone soils drain well and add a firm line to the wine. The wine is aged 12 months in a mix of French and American oak, where French barrels lend a finer, subtler spice and American oak adds a fuller vanilla and coconut sweetness, both rounding the tannins through slow oxygen exchange. The colour is deep purple, the nose offering ripe plum and red berries, black pepper, vanilla and liquorice over a smoky note. The palate is full and warm, the tannin ripe, the finish long. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits lamb, beef and gently spiced dishes.
