Description
Albet i Noya La Milana is a red from D.O. Penedes in Catalonia, made by the organic and vegan certified Albet i Noya winery, named for the bee-eater whose presence marks a healthy vineyard. The wine is a blend of Garnacha Tinta and Merlot. Penedes runs from coast to higher inland terraces, where Mediterranean warmth ripens the fruit fully while cooler nights and altitude hold the acidity and the alcohol near 14 percent. Organic farming, with no synthetic inputs, keeps the soil active and is reflected in the wine's herbal, savoury lift. Ageing runs eighteen months in 225 litre French oak barrels, a long spell that softens the Garnacha's natural exuberance and the Merlot's plush fruit through slow oxygen exchange, while the wood adds vanilla, clove and a fine, dry tannin frame. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows ripe plum and red berries over black pepper, vanilla, liquorice and dried herbs. The palate is full and warming, with rounded tannin and a spiced, persistent finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees in a large glass. It suits roast lamb and grilled vegetables with mushrooms.
