Description
Albert Bichot produces this Beaujolais-Villages from Gamay in a deliberately pure, low-intervention style, made with no added sulphites so the grape's natural flavour and aroma come through undimmed. Sulphites are the standard preservative in winemaking, guarding against oxidation and stray bacteria, and working without them demands scrupulous cellar hygiene and careful handling. The granite and schist soils of the Beaujolais-Villages zone suit Gamay well, giving bright, fruit-driven reds with a mineral edge, while the cool northern climate keeps the acidity fresh. The wine spends just five months in stainless steel, an inert vessel that adds no oak and locks in the vivid primary fruit. Being unsulphured and natural, it is best drunk young and kept cool. The colour is bright, translucent ruby, the nose showing cranberry, red cherry, redcurrant and a green herbaceous lift. The palate is light and juicy, with fresh acidity, soft low tannins and a clean, savoury finish. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 14 degrees. It suits roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter dishes, and can stand in for a white at the table.
