Description
Gerardo Méndez farms old Albariño vines in the Salnés valley of Rías Baixas, the coolest and most maritime part of Galicia, and Do Ferreiro is his family label. Lourido is a single plot bottling from this cool green corner of Spain's Atlantic coast. The soils here are decomposed granite over subsoil, free draining and low in fertility, which suits Albariño and lends the wine its stony cut. Sitting close to the ocean, the vineyards see high rainfall, cool nights and constant sea breezes, all of which lock in the grape's naturally high acidity. Ageing on the lees adds texture and a subtle savoury weight through slow autolysis, filling out a wine that would otherwise be very lean. The colour is pale straw with green tints. The nose is fresh and precise, with lemon, white peach, green apple and white flowers over a clear saline note. The palate is crisp and mineral, the fruit tight and the finish salty and long. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
