Albamar makes this light Atlantic red in Cambados, in the heart of Rías Baixas. A blend of Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro and Mencía at just eleven percent, it is fresh and floral with raspberry, strawberry and a saline edge.
Description
Albamar works from Cambados, at the centre of D.O. Rías Baixas in Galicia, where Xurxo Alba Padín has been making wine since 2006. The region's high rainfall and cool Atlantic climate keep the vineyards green and the grapes low in sugar, which is why this red comes in at only eleven percent alcohol. The blend of native Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro and Mencía grows on granite-influenced sandy soils close to the sea, lending a saline, mineral character. After a short fermentation the wine rests six months in stainless steel and three months in barrel, an approach that protects the bright fruit and floral aromatics while adding a little texture and roundness. The colour is pale, bright cherry red. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with raspberry, strawberry and redcurrant over white flowers, crushed pepper and a savoury, briny note. The palate is light bodied and fresh, with crisp acidity, fine soft tannins and an Atlantic salinity on the clean finish. Serve lightly chilled at 13 to 14 degrees. It is a flexible food wine, good with oily fish, charcuterie and lighter poultry dishes.
