Xurxo Alba makes Albamar O Pereiro from a clay plot near the sea in O Salnés, in D.O. Rías Baixas. This Albariño rests on its lees, giving green apple, citrus and stone fruit over a taut Atlantic salinity.
Description
Albamar is the Cambados estate of Xurxo Alba Padín, who took over the family business in 2006 in the O Salnés sub region of D.O. Rías Baixas and built a range of fresh, small production Atlantic whites. O Pereiro is a single variety Albariño from a plot with clay soil close to the sea. The maritime setting is central to the wine, the cool wet Atlantic climate and the proximity to the coast driving both the bracing acidity and the saline character, while the clay soil lends a little more weight than the region's typical granite parcels. The wine is aged on its lees, which broadens the texture through the slow release of mannoproteins and adds a subtle savoury note without masking the fruit. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is fresh and precise, with green apple, lemon and white peach lifted by a light floral note. The palate is dry and taut, the fruit carried by high acidity and a clear salty tang on the finish. Serve chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a natural partner for shellfish and grilled white fish.
