Description
Albamar is a family winery in Cambados, in the Val do Salnés in Rías Baixas, run by Xurxo Alba Padín since 2006. Best known for Albariño, the estate also works Atlantic red grapes, and O Esteiro is made from Espadeiro, a local, pale-skinned, high-acid variety. The vineyards sit near the mouth of the Umia river, where the maritime climate and constant sea breeze keep temperatures moderate and ripening gentle, so the wine stays light and fresh at 12.5 per cent alcohol, with a saline coastal character. Ageing for eight months in French oak rounds the texture with light oxygen exchange while leaving the delicate fruit intact. The colour is pale, bright ruby. The nose shows wild strawberry, redcurrant and cherry over rose and a briny, earthy note. The palate is light bodied and crisp, with low, fine tannin, high acidity and a fresh, savoury finish. Serve cool, at 13 to 14 degrees. It suits grilled oily fish, poultry and lighter game.
