Alba Abiega returned to the land to make this Tempranillo in Ribera del Duero. Nine months in oak give a deep crimson red of fresh dark fruit and violet, with the firm structure the high plateau brings to the grape.
Description
Alba Abiega desde Zero is a Tempranillo from D.O. Ribera del Duero, made by Alba en Ribera. The wine grew out of a career change, a return to the land after more than twenty years working in technology and advertising, and the name marks that fresh start. Ribera del Duero lies on a high continental plateau where hot days and cold nights drive a wide diurnal range. That swing ripens Tempranillo fully while preserving acidity, giving the wine its depth of colour and freshness in equal measure. After fermentation the wine ages nine months in oak barrels. That period of barrel ageing lets oxygen pass slowly through the staves, softening the tannin and adding vanilla, cocoa and spice to the fruit while building structure. The colour is deep crimson with intense violet undertones. The nose is vibrant, with fresh dark fruit, violet and oak spice over an earthy base. The palate is full and structured, with ripe tannin and a long finish that keeps the fruit fresh. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant ahead of time. It suits roast and grilled red meat and earthy mushroom dishes.
