Description
Alamos Torrontés is made by Alamos, the project from the Catena Zapata family that reaches beyond their Mendoza base into the far north of Argentina. The fruit is grown at extreme altitude around Cafayate in Salta, between roughly 1,500 and 2,000 metres, among the highest vineyards in the world. Torrontés is the country's signature aromatic white and thrives in this setting: intense high-altitude sunlight develops the grape's floral, perfumed aromatics, while very cold desert nights and a wide diurnal range lock in acidity and keep the wine fresh and defined. It is made as a young, unoaked wine to protect those primary aromatics, with fermentation in stainless steel keeping the fruit clean and the perfume intact. The wine is pale, with a lifted, expressive nose of rose petal, white peach and orange blossom over elderflower and citrus. Despite the aromatic intensity the palate is dry, with white flowers, a touch of ginger spice and a crisp finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
