Alamos, from the Catena Zapata family, make this Malbec from high Andean vineyards at 1,500 metres in Mendoza. Twelve months in French and American oak give a ripe, supple red of dark plum, violet and sweet spice.
Description
Alamos Seleccion Malbec comes from Mendoza, made by Alamos within the Catena Zapata family, a winery with more than a hundred years of history in Argentina. The grapes are hand selected from high vineyards in the Andes at around 1,500 metres, the altitude that brings Malbec to its best in this region. Height is everything here: strong daytime sun ripens the fruit fully while cold mountain nights preserve acidity, colour and aroma, and the intense sunlight thickens skins to give the deep colour and fine tannin that mark Andean Malbec. After fermentation the wine spends twelve months in French and American oak, where gradual oxygenation softens the tannins and adds vanilla, cocoa and sweet spice. The colour is deep violet purple. The nose is generous, with ripe plum, black cherry and red berries over vanilla and a dusting of cocoa. The palate is full and rounded, with ripe dark fruit, supple tannins, a peppery lift and a warming, spice tinged finish. This is a ripe, fruit driven style that drinks well young. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees with grilled and roasted red meats.
