A sixteen year Caroni from Alambic, this 1999 single cask is a softer 45% take on the distillery’s dirty side, tar and petrol over caramel, roasted wood, black tea and an earthy, orange-peel finish.
Description
Alambic bottled this single cask of Caroni under its Rare Single Cask Rum line, distilled in 1999 and aged sixteen years at a gentler 45%. It draws on the closed Trinidad distillery whose rescued stock Velier made legendary, presenting the industrial Caroni style in a lighter, more accessible format.
Matured in ex-bourbon oak from molasses, it shows caramel, spice, tar and roasted notes on the nose, then spice, tar, oak and orange peel on the palate, closing dirty, earthy and woody with more orange peel. At 45% it is comparatively easy to drink while still carrying the markers a big Caroni should, tar, petrol, polish, black tea and roasted, woody bitterness, in a continental, restrained register. Opinions split on whether it dilutes too much of the distillery's character. A useful entry point for those Caroni-curious but not yet ready for the heavy cask strength bruisers.
