Alain Graillot is one of the northern Rhone’s finest growers, and his Crozes-Hermitage is pure Syrah from vines on the appellation’s alluvial terraces. Sixteen months in oak give peppery dark berry, olive, smoke and a savoury, structured palate.
Description
Alain Graillot Crozes-Hermitage is a northern Rhone Syrah from Domaine Alain Graillot, based at Pont de l'Isere in the AOC Crozes-Hermitage. Graillot built his reputation in a couple of decades and helped restore the appellation's standing. The vineyards lie on the flat alluvial terraces around the cellar, where galets and sandy gravel over clay drain well and reflect warmth, ripening the Syrah fully while the continental climate and cooler nights preserve its acidity and peppery aromatics. Farming follows respectful, low-intervention methods. The wine ages sixteen months in French and American oak barrels, a measured elevage that rounds the tannin through slow oxygen exchange without masking the variety's savoury character. It is deep ruby with a purple edge. The nose is dark berry and plum with black pepper, olive, cured meat and a smoky, herbal lift typical of Syrah from this latitude. The palate is medium to full, the tannin firm and fine, with bright acidity carrying the peppery fruit to a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted ahead. It suits grilled red meat, game and herbed dishes.
