Akutain farms traditionally in Haro, the historical capital of the Rioja Alta. This Crianza blends Tempranillo with Garnacha and Viura, ages twenty-four months in barrel and eight in bottle, and shows red cherry, vanilla and a savoury, leathery edge.
Description
Akutain is based in Haro, the historical heart of the Rioja Alta, and works in an unhurried, old-school style: traditional growing, natural fermentations and long barrel ageing. The Crianza is led by Tempranillo with Garnacha for roundness and a touch of Viura. The Rioja Alta is the coolest, highest part of the appellation, and the Atlantic-influenced climate with its wide day-to-night temperature swing lets the fruit ripen slowly and hold acidity. The wine spends twenty-four months in barrel, well beyond the Crianza minimum, followed by eight months in bottle. Extended barrel time means slow, steady oxygen exchange that polishes the tannin and brings out vanilla, clove and savoury complexity, while the bottle rest lets everything settle before release. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows red cherry and berry fruit over vanilla, leather, tobacco and dried herbs. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, with supple tannin, a savoury core and a clean, lingering finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It suits roast lamb, grilled pork and hard cheeses.
