Description
Aiurri works in the village of Leza in Rioja Alavesa, under the shelter of the Sierra de Toloño, on a site with a long history of vine growing. The estate is certified organic and draws on the calcareous clay soils typical of the Álava foothills, where altitude and cool nights preserve acidity and aromatic detail. The wine blends Tempranillo for structure and red fruit with Garnacha for warmth and a little Graciano for colour and freshness. Ageing runs for sixteen months split between cement tanks, which hold the fruit clean and primary, and oak barrels, which add a measured frame of spice without dominating. The result is a deep ruby red with aromas of raspberry, plum and cherry over dried herbs, pepper and a stony earthiness. The palate is medium bodied and balanced, with supple tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury finish that reflects the cool high vineyards more than the cellar. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. It is a flexible table red for roast meats, grilled vegetables and hard cheese.
