Agustí Torelló Mata makes this low alcohol Xarel·lo in the Penedès, from vines on calcareous clay soils. Four months on the lees add a little weight to a fresh, dry white showing green apple, citrus and a herbal, saline finish.
Description
Agustí Torelló Mata Xic is an organic, single varietal Xarel·lo from the D.O. Penedès in Catalonia, made by a producer whose founder opened the first wine analysis laboratory in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia in 1953. Xarel·lo is one of the classic Penedès white grapes, best known as a component of cava but increasingly bottled as a still wine in its own right. The vines grow on calcareous clay soils, which drain well and reflect heat while holding some moisture, helping the grapes ripen evenly and retain acidity. The wine spends four months on its lees, and this contact with the spent yeast adds body, a fine texture and a subtle savoury depth to what is otherwise a light, fresh style at just 11 percent alcohol. It is organic and vegan. The wine is pale with green tints, the nose showing green apple and pear with lemon, white flowers and a herbal, thyme like note. The palate is dry and crisp, textured by the lees, with an almond edge and a saline finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with light food.
