Description
Afortunado is a single variety Verdejo from D.O. Rueda, made by Viñedos Singulares, the project of brothers Luis and Carlos Barrero. The fruit comes from century old vines in the Segovian municipalities of Moraleja de Coca, Santiuste and Nava de la Asunción, where the vineyards sit on the free draining sandy and stony soils that define high Rueda. The climate is broadly Mediterranean with a strong continental influence, bringing long cold winters, late spring frosts and hot dry summers. Wide swings between warm days and cold nights slow ripening and lock in acidity and aromatic precision, which is why the wine holds its freshness despite the heat. It is fermented at low temperature in stainless steel to protect the primary fruit, then bottled young without oak. The colour is a bright yellow green. The nose is expressive, led by pineapple and mango with green apple behind, and the palate is fresh and dry with the herbal, faintly bitter twist that marks old vine Verdejo. Serve it well chilled, around 8 to 10 degrees.
