Description
Braó Vinyes Velles is a red from D.O. Montsant, made by Acústic Celler in Marçà, Tarragona. The winery was founded in 2004 by Albert Jané, who set out to work the vineyards in a personal, low-intervention way away from over-modern winemaking. This blend of old-vine Garnacha and Cariñena comes from vines over 80 years old, planted between 300 and 600 metres on stony soils. Those poor, free-draining stones force the roots deep and keep yields low, concentrating the fruit, while the altitude brings cool nights that hold acidity and freshness in a warm Mediterranean climate. Cariñena adds structure, colour and a savoury grip to Garnacha's ripe, generous fruit. The wine ages thirteen months in French oak, softening the tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adding a light spice. Farming is organic. The colour is deep cherry red. The nose shows ripe plum and red berries with black pepper, liquorice, dried herbs and a stony, mineral edge. The palate is full and savoury at 15 percent alcohol, with firm tannins and a long finish. Serve at 17 degrees with red meats and game.
