Abuelo XV Tawny

Abuelo is the brand of Varela Hermanos, Panama's dominant producer, made on multi-column stills in the smooth Spanish-style ron idiom. This XV is a molasses rum finished in tawny port casks, which deepens an already gentle, dessert-leaning profile, and like much of the category it drinks on the sweeter, rounded side.

Column distillation gives a light, clean base, so the character is led by wood, port and a soft sweetness rather than the spirit. Expect vanilla, raisin and a clear port note on the nose, then a sweet palate of cherry, dried fruit, caramel and chocolate, with honey and a whisper of smoke on the finish. At 40% there is minimal burn. This is a comfortable bridge for tawny port or sweeter-rum drinkers, an easygoing after-dinner sipper to pair with dessert or chocolate rather than a dry, structured rum.
