Abuelo Centuria

Abuelo Centuria is a no age statement release from Varela Hermanos, the dominant Panamanian producer behind the Abuelo range, made in the smooth Spanish style from molasses on a column still. Because that distillate comes off light and clean, the character here is shaped by oak ageing and by added sugar rather than by the spirit itself.

The result is a rich, dessert leaning pour, vanilla, caramel and toffee with dried fruit and soft oak, turning a little smoky and spicy on the woody finish. It is a sweetened rum and reads that way, all comfort and roundness rather than power or funk, and it is fairer to present it as the honeyed after dinner style it is than to imply the smoothness comes from age alone. At an easy 40% it drinks neat without effort and sits naturally beside Zacapa style sweetness, a soft, older feeling upgrade for drinkers who already enjoy that lane.
