This is one of Absolut's flavoured expressions, made in Sweden from a grain spirit distilled for the brand's usual purity and then infused with natural watermelon flavour. The choice to flavour rather than sweeten is the point: there is no added sugar, so the watermelon comes through as a fresh, ripe fruit note rather than a syrupy one, carried on a clean and smooth base at 38% by volume. Leading with natural flavouring over a neutral grain spirit lets the fruit stay bright and authentic.
The nose is fresh and clearly watermelon. The palate is fruity and lightly sweet, with that same juicy melon running through into a soft finish. To play the flavour without burying it, build a watermelon cooler: 50ml vodka, the juice of half a lime and a handful of torn mint, shaken and lengthened with soda over crushed ice, the lime and mint sharpening the melon into something genuinely refreshing on a hot afternoon.
