Aberlour 18 Year Old is a refined, slow-matured whisky that draws its depth from long ageing in American and European oak before receiving an additional boost from first fill PX and Oloroso sherry casks, giving it a profile built on dark chocolate, butterscotch, dried fruit and gentle spice, with a smooth, creamy palate that carries honeyed raisins, pepper and a warm, oaked finish. It typically scores in the mid-80s among reviewers and is viewed as one of Aberlour’s most balanced age-statement releases. The whisky reflects the character of its home distillery, founded in 1879 by James Fleming in the village of Aberlour at the meeting point of the Lour Burn and the River Spey. Fleming’s focus on local water sources and quality spirit set the tone for the distillery’s style, which now combines spring water from the Ben Rinnes area with a maturation approach centred on sherry and bourbon influence. Today, under Chivas Brothers, Aberlour continues to lean into its sherry heritage, and this 18 year old stands out as a mature, polished example of that house character.
