Description
Abel Mendoza Monje was founded in 1988 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja, where the estate farms with care along the Ebro. This white is a single variety Viura from thirty year old vines planted on clay and limestone soil, a mix that gives good structure and acidity under a moderate continental climate. The winemaking is deliberately traditional and hands on: the wine is fermented in new 225 litre French oak barrels and then ages on its lees for four to five months in the same wood. Fermenting in barrel rather than steel binds the oak to the fruit and gives a seamless, textured result, while lees ageing with occasional stirring adds a creamy weight and savoury depth. The colour is bright gold. The nose is layered, with white peach and pear over toasted bread, almond and beeswax, and a fine vanilla note from the new oak. The palate is full and textured yet fresh, the ripe fruit and creamy oak carried by firm acidity and a long, nutty, savoury finish. Serve at around 11 to 12 degrees in a full white glass.

Additional information
Serve it with roast chicken, grilled white fish or pork, where its texture and toasty depth carry the plate. The nutty, oak led character also flatters a hard aged cheese such as Manchego or Gruyère.
