Abel Mendoza makes this organic single-vineyard Tempranillo in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Rioja Alta. Eighteen months in French oak give a textured red of red berries, plum and a fine savoury structure shaped by the soils.
Description
Abel Mendoza Tempranillo Grano a Grano is an organic single-variety Tempranillo from D.O.Ca. Rioja, made by Abel Mendoza and Maite Fernandez at their winery in San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta. With only 16 hectares, they produce small quantities of sought-after wines shaped by careful work in the vineyard and a reading of the different soils the vines grow on. The high, cool sites of Rioja Alta give a long, even ripening, with warm days and cold nights holding the acidity and freshness that mark the style. The name reflects the meticulous berry-by-berry selection at harvest. The wine ages 18 months in French oak, which firms the tannins and adds vanilla and a measured woodspice while malolactic fermentation rounds the texture. It pours deep ruby, with red berries, cherry and plum on the nose over earth, dried herbs and pepper. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and savoury, with fine tannin and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted. It suits roast lamb, pork and mushroom dishes.
