Description
Abel Mendoza Monje farms 18 hectares along the banks of the Ebro in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja, working organically since starting out in 1988. This white is made from Tempranillo Blanco, a natural white mutation of the region's famous red grape, prized for its aromatic freshness. The vines grow on the estate's rough, mixed soils of clay, marl and fine sandstone under a moderate continental climate cooled by the Cantabrian influence, a combination that gives ripe fruit with retained acidity. The wine is fermented in barrel and rested five months on its lees, which softens and broadens the palate and adds a subtle bready depth while keeping the fresh varietal character. The colour is bright pale gold. The nose is aromatic and appealing, with white peach, pear and citrus peel lifted by white flowers. The palate is dry and gently textured, the ripe fruit carried by fresh acidity and a soft, saline, faintly creamy finish from the lees ageing. Serve at around 10 to 11 degrees in a white glass.
