A barrel-fermented Rioja white from Abel Mendoza, blending Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía and Viura from organically farmed plots by the Ebro. Five months in French oak give a layered, textured wine of stone fruit, beeswax and a nutty, creamy weight.
Description
Abel Mendoza Monje works 18 hectares of organically farmed vines along the banks of the Ebro at San Vicente de la Sonsierra, in Rioja, making personal wines from small parcels. 5V is a white blend, or coupage, of Garnacha Blanca, Malvasía and Viura, each variety fermented and raised so its character shows in the whole. The vineyards sit on mixed soils of clay, marl and fine sandstone under a moderately continental climate softened by the Cantabrian influence, which brings cooler, damper air and helps hold freshness in the fruit. The wine is barrel-fermented and given five months in French oak, so wood and wine mature together, while regular contact with the fine lees and the slow oxygen exchange through the barrel build texture and a savoury depth. The colour is a bright golden straw. The nose layers ripe white peach and pear with beeswax, almond and a touch of honey from the oak. The palate is broad and textured, the varieties knitted together, with a creamy weight and a long, nutty finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits richer white fish, roast chicken, pork and hard cheeses.
