Description
Abadía de Poblet is the only winery in Catalonia set within a historic monument, drawing on the Cistercian winemaking tradition brought from Burgundy and the knowledge of Conca de Barberà, an inland Catalan region that has kept its native grapes. This red is led by Trepat, a light, perfumed local variety, blended with Garnacha, Monastrell and Tempranillo for colour and structure. The higher, cooler inland vineyards give a wide diurnal range that preserves acidity and keeps alcohol moderate at 14 per cent. Ageing for twelve months in large foudres allows slow, gentle oxygen exchange over a low surface-to-volume ratio, softening tannin and adding savoury complexity without overt oak. The colour is medium ruby. The nose shows red cherry and plum with dried herbs and a light spice. The palate is medium bodied and elegant, with fine tannin, fresh acidity and an earthy, peppery finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits roast lamb, poultry and mushroom dishes.
