Description
Abadal Picapoll is made by Bodegas Abadal in D.O. Pla del Bages, inland from Barcelona around Santa Maria d'Horta d'Avinyó. The wine is entirely Picapoll Blanc, a variety native to the Bages that had nearly disappeared and that the winery has worked to recover, taken here from old vines on clay and limestone soils. The climate is Mediterranean with continental influences, marked by low rainfall and a large temperature contrast between day and night, and that diurnal swing is what gives the wine its aromatic freshness and firm acidity. The limestone in the soil reinforces the mineral, saline line. The wine is made young and unoaked, with cool fermentation in stainless steel to hold the delicate aromatics and keep the fruit primary. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is fresh and floral, with lemon and green apple over white flowers, a thyme note and a hint of pear. The palate is light and crisp, the acidity bright and the finish clean, mineral and gently saline. Serve it cold at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits white fish, shellfish, fresh salads and goat cheese.
