A Pie de Tierra makes Fuerza Bruta from Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos. Aged in chestnut barrels, this fresh light red shows ripe strawberry, tomato leaf and dried herbs over granite minerality.
Description
A Pie de Tierra is a project of sommelier Aitor Paul and winemaker David Villamiel in the Sierra de Gredos, in the D.O. Vinos de Madrid. The Garnacha grows on decomposed granite, a poor sandy soil that drains quickly and gives a light bodied, mineral style of red. At altitude the cool mountain nights and a wide diurnal range slow ripening and keep the acidity bright, so the wine stays fresh despite the warm days. Farming is biodynamic and natural, with minimal intervention in the cellar. The wine is aged twelve months in chestnut rather than oak barrels, an old regional practice; chestnut breathes differently from oak and lends a soft structure with little overt wood flavour, leaving the fruit and herbal notes to lead. The colour is a bright light ruby. The nose shows ripe strawberry and red cherry with tomato leaf, dried herbs and a touch of pepper. The palate is light and fresh, with juicy acidity, fine tannins and a savoury granite edge on the finish. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 15 degrees. It suits white meats, charcuterie and vegetable dishes.
